I was so sad when I heard it had to be cut down. I really didn't want to accept it. Really I used to look forward to helping deal with the branches and cutting it back whenever I got to visit the home away from home. To me the tree symbolized one can grow tall and reach up to levels none thought were possible. I truly loved this tree. So many memories under it in such a short amount of time.

So sorry about your loss. I know it feels awful to lose one of those beauties.
To be on the safe side, I don't like to prune my native shrubs by more than 10% at one time, and I prune them in the dormant period, like right now, in September. But maybe your sage is just dormant and will come back in the spring! Don't give up on her quite yet.

I always wondered why black sage was called black, and now I know. Thanks. It is one of my favorite shrubs for the garden. I have one that is 9 years old, next to a bench in the backyard. I love the fragrance. It looks dormant in late summer, so for interest, I have planted a chaparral clematis at its feet. I hope to have cotton puff balls adorning the black sage in future summers.
